Message from Coach Chris Scott

Welcome to the 2013 season.

Pre-season is now behind us and it’s fair to say everyone is excited about the season ahead. The game continues to change for the better and we pride ourselves on staying ahead of the curve in terms of identifying how the game will change before it happens.

Everyone here continually challenge themselves to get better. That is one of the great things about working at the Geelong Football Club and with the people we have at the club.

We firmly believe that we will be a better team this year. But so will every other team in the AFL. That is the nature of modern footy. But as you have seen over the past years, our players and coaches are up for the challenge and welcome change. There will be 12-13 club entering the season with a genuine belief they will be playing in finals come September. That means this year will be one of the tightest and toughest in recent memory.

Nobody here is satisfied or is resting on past achievements. It is what is happening right now and into the future that is our focus. We spend every day trying to improve and wanting to maximize our potential.

One of our challenges is to bring our young players through the system and to integrate them into senior football, while at the same time doing everything we can to challenge for the premiership.

We all believe these two things can be achieved. As we have said over the past two years, there will be opportunity for young people to play, but it is up to all players to prove through performance that they deserve to play. Ultimately football is a meritocracy – you get picked on what you bring to the team. Having said that, to enjoy success this year we will not be relying on 25 players. We have said in the past and continue to believe that we need everyone contributing.

We are also looking for some younger players that have been in the system for a few years to step up and take more of a leadership role within the group and the club. These players may not be part of our player leadership group but we still expect them to show growth in the area both on and off the field.

We have enjoyed a positive pre-season. Our NAB Cup results were positive, with the majority of our list playing well and pushing for selection. The new players have fitted in well and have come to understand the ‘Geelong way’ of doing things.

There will be challenges ahead in 2013. It is how we deal with the difficult times that will largely determine how the season pans out for us. These challenges will come in many forms.

The first of these will come in round one when we face Hawthorn at the MCG. We are all excited by that opening game and the matches that will follow. Game day is the opportunity for our team to show and be rewarded for the hard work they have put in.

What we will need is internal belief and confidence in what we are doing, and equally importantly, belief from you, our passionate supporters and members. I assure you that everyone associated with the club will keep pushing to deliver success.

Thank you for your support…it is important and appreciated by all of us.
