Training report 14/1

Managed to pop down to training yesterday at Elderslie Reserve. Only stayed for about 40 minutes but it was enough to be able to let people know how the boys are travelling.

When I arrived they just started a simple length of the ground kicking drill. It appeared to be more of a warm than anything else as the intensity was low and voice minimal. But the skills were ok in the blustery conditions.

Once that was done they went to another drill where there was a bit of a contest on the HBF where they had to handball through the traffic then go through CHF and then FF. This when the level went up and the boys hit their straps. Skills were good and intensity high. Was very impressed with the skill level and ability to get through traffic.

Next was basically like match practice, split into two teams and just moving the ball up and down the ground. Once again was done very well in the windy conditions. The boys look like they have lost nothing in the break. I think at this point the 1st year players did something else on the other side of the ground that I couldn’t quite see.

Some of the players I noticed.

James Podsiadly - Moved extremely well and seemed to be very quick on the lead. Got a lot of the ball in the drills and presented fantastically on the lead and his kicking was immaculate. I think he may be a surprise packet and play a bit more than we think and make a significant contribution, who wouldn’t with the delivery he gets.

James Kelly - Just got a lot of the ball and moved well.

Dawson Simpson - Looked to be more comfortable with the ball in his hands than Mark Blake. I thought he looked good. Had good size about him and was reasonably quick. May get a NAB run, was impressive.

Tom Hawkins - Looked fit as. Very toned and presented at CHF in all the drills. Led well and trained the house down I am reluctant to say.

Brad Ottens - Was doing all the drills but with minimal use of one hand, but looked good.

Steve Johnson - Participated in all the drills I was and moved well.

Gary Ablett - Well I just saw him training and that was enough to excite me.

Nathan Djerkura - Trained but still doesn’t grab me, I don’t know what but just doesn’t look like he will make it for some reason.

Darren Milburn - Just moved around in the drills got the ball when he wanted appeared to get forward a lot, sign of things to come maybe.

Josh Hunt - Did everything and looked good.

Mitch Duncan - Only saw him briefly but liked very much what I saw. Great foot skills, could be the player of the draftees to play this year.

Paul Chapman - Moved well and looked fit.

Tom Lonergan - Looked to have put on a bit of size.

Cam Mooney - trained the whole time and looked a bit lacsidasical but when he needed to go he did and looked good.

Didn’t see, Scarlett , Mitch Brown, Max Rooke, Andrew Mackie and a few others. There was a rehab group but a bit far away for me to see.

How that was good info. Get up there and have a look you can get really close and hear everything, great for the fans.
