EXCLUSIVE: GEELONG premiership player Mathew Stokes has been charged with serious drug offences.

He is expected to face Geelong Magistrates' Court this afternoon charged with trafficking and possessing cocaine.

Stokes was questioned this morning by detectives at Geelong police station as part of an on-going drug operation.

Stokes' arrest is believed to be linked to an investigation which led to five people being charged after early morning raids last Friday.

One of them was a nightclub security manager, accused of being the ringleader of a drug ring.

More than $3000 cash believed to be the proceeds of crime and $50,000 worth of drugs have been seized.

The young forward was part of the Cats' 2007 flag triumph over Port Adelaide.

He was considered unlucky to not be part of last year's premiership win over St Kilda.

It is understood senior Geelong officials including club president Frank Costa have been called to an urgent meeting at Skilled Stadium.

Geelong Football Club is expected to make a statement this afternoon.

A Victoria Police spokesman said he could not comment on the charged man’s identity.

The 177cm Stokes, originally from the Northern Territory, was recruited from the Woodville-West Torrens club in Adelaide in 2006.

He was passed over three times in the draft before getting his chance.

Since then, Stokes has played 71 games and booted 108 goals.
